When my wife and I first got together, we made a road trip to Toronto. Being of Greek extraction, I have tons of family in the Danforth and surrounding environs. For various reasons, we weren’t able to connect with them beforehand, so we didn’t get any recommendations on where to stay or what to do. Being BnB folks, we made the rookie mistake of booking one on Jarvis St., by the aboriginal center, not realizing that staying in a BnB in a big city not only is unnecessary given the plethora of hotels, etc., but can also get pretty hairy if you’re not really familiar with the various neighborhoods. Needless to say, it was pretty scary, especially at night, and it kind of soured us on the city, but one memory that remains vivid is our daily walk down to the Redpath Sugar Refinery and that distinct “odor” as you approached the water. We might have been a few blocks away from the Hockey Hall of Fame, etc, but I felt like I was on a different planet. But, in a very strange way, it was kind of cool - it felt futuristic, like the Terminator. Your song literally transported me back to that place and time. Post script - my family still cracks up about it, in disbelief that we would stay in a BnB in that area, and have been begging us to come up and visit and give the city another chance, which we will of course do…. Poor, poor Leafs fans….
