Great song. Every time I see/hear the word sibilance, I immediately think of the Tom Hanks SNL sketch where he’s the roadie doing the mic check for Aerosmith on Wayne’s World.
Another gem. I think I can hear some holdover influence from the New Mendicants project. This is my first Substack subscription, and I'm digging the direct-release, song-with-commentary format. On another tack: If you know your Pernice trivia, you remember that Ma gave the pasta machine to Joe's sister. Clearly, Joe has recovered from this snub - at least materially, as those are some beautiful noodles.
I enjoyed your commentary almost as much as the song. This is a fun way to share your music. I like simple recordings. I enjoy hearing the artist without all the sonic layers. Carry on, Bicycle Nerd.
"I tried to sell the wine before its time." Joe, I have to use that somehow - did you come up with that, or are you passing it along from someone else?
Is that Martin the same one you’ve played in concerts over the years? I’ll raise a glass to dead strings. There really is a difference in sound when you dig in. I also like that it gives me an excuse to be cheap…
Nice one. Yes, sometimes a bit of time is needed for the better decisions about lyrics, key and chords to come through. The guitar sounds good. My favourite acoustic guitar is an all-mahogany Martin - a little OO-17 from the 30s that I've had for many years.
Do not hesitate to share your pasta and soup recipes, but infuse it with sweet nothings while leaving out a key spice/herb that only an artist would do to another when sharing recipes to receive the occasional: "I'm not sure, I think I missed something. Something didn't taste right compared to how I remember that meal you made... Did you leave something out?" What a song. I think of the many cold midwest nights I had running around cities with my wife before our son came along to educate us on the importance of being idle— with warm pasta and many cheeses.
Love the song and the Substack, thanks for posting your tunes. Would it be possible to add a "repeat track" feature to the audio posts? Would love to be able to set the new song(s) on repeat play and not have to press play over and over, thanks!
I appreciate the response and looking into it. Also, I think you might be venturing into "cute or self deprecating" territory if you think I'm the only one who might want to hear the tunes on a loop...
T. Bond— the way to do this is pretty simple actually: You see that "Listen In Podcast App" link under the Substack player? Click that. Add Joe's podcast feed to your phone's podcast app player, or your tablet's podcast app, laptop, desktop, any device etc. I have a few podcast Substacks I listen to (repeating through episodes like a playlist feed). On my iMac and iPad for work, easy to add to Apple Podcast app player. Should be the same for an iPhone with the same app. On an Android phone, I use the Google Podcast app, works nice and easy. Go for it!

Ha! Yes, it was the gnocchi machine. I never even got a shot at it.

"We will sell no wine before its time" is an old Paul Masson ad slogan. Which is a shame because I was ready to comment on the "Gallos humor."
You are correct. Those Orson Wells ads were part of the fabric of my youth.
HA! well, it sure sounded genius in my ears. I was listening to the song as I read it.....

Never thought of leaving out ingredients. I like it.

Hey, I honestly don’t know if that feature exists. I have a look. That said, you may be the only person who wants to hear it on a loop.
(But who knows. Maybe if there’s an album’s worth of good takes I’ll look into pressing some Substack vinyl.)
Thanks for listening.

Worked like a charm, thanks Andy!
