Cavalier, I thought I had no more to show. Living on spongecake and the radio. We loved from limb to limb And when all that was done We'd be married by the sun. And I don't know if half of what we said was true, But everything I loved was you. And I wrote you so many poems. I cast them out to sea. Like a song that's not bound by any key It got away from me. People fill their lives with things that won't sustain happiness or love or take away their pain. Of the all the holes that mark the road where we came from, The hole you dug's the deepest one. And I don't know if half of what I sing is true, But every line was sung to you. And I wrote you so many poems I cast on many seas. Like a song that's not bound by any key It got away from me. It got away from me. It got away from me. words and music by Joe Pernice, Bony Gap Music (BMI), admin by BUG/BMG
Just to say that I don't think anyone who signed up for a Joe Pernice substack is going to be too concerned about a sad or dark song. Thanks for doing this!
Joe - I am writing you from Baños Ecuador where I just listened to the tune while staring out at the Andes Mountains. It fit. I am so glad that you shared the song with us even if you never put it on an album. Your short stories about the songs and the technical side are wonderful to give context to your thinking and your craft.
I'm convinced "happy" songs don't make us happy when enemies are invading. Better to embrace real feelings. Glad you dropped this one. And love where the theme lyric came from.
Sometimes an inspiration isn’t apparent but can definitely hear the Blaze Foley influence. Beautiful song, especially the verses.
If you haven’t seen the Mike Judge Tales From The Tour Bus episode on Foley — the whole series is great — it’s highly recommended. His music is often sorrowful but he can also be savagely humorous. Just a phenomenal lyricist.

I guess you make a good point.
Thanks for listening.

Thanks for listening, Franklin.
I’d love to be staring out at the Andes. Enjoy

A great one. In sad, heavy times, music that has beauty in its melody and expression can fortify and enrich you, even if it's sad and heavy.
Was going to any the same thing as David - lovely song. We are all here for the full Joe Pernice Experience!
Great tune! Really appreciated the background information about how the song came to be. Thanks for sharing!
