Just to say that I don't think anyone who signed up for a Joe Pernice substack is going to be too concerned about a sad or dark song. Thanks for doing this!

Joe - I am writing you from Baños Ecuador where I just listened to the tune while staring out at the Andes Mountains. It fit. I am so glad that you shared the song with us even if you never put it on an album. Your short stories about the songs and the technical side are wonderful to give context to your thinking and your craft.

Thanks for listening, Franklin.

I’d love to be staring out at the Andes. Enjoy

I'm convinced "happy" songs don't make us happy when enemies are invading. Better to embrace real feelings. Glad you dropped this one. And love where the theme lyric came from.

Sometimes an inspiration isn’t apparent but can definitely hear the Blaze Foley influence. Beautiful song, especially the verses.

If you haven’t seen the Mike Judge Tales From The Tour Bus episode on Foley — the whole series is great — it’s highly recommended. His music is often sorrowful but he can also be savagely humorous. Just a phenomenal lyricist.

A great one. In sad, heavy times, music that has beauty in its melody and expression can fortify and enrich you, even if it's sad and heavy.
